Preparation for Surgical Practice: From Principles to Application on Surgical Models

SURGERY WORKSHOP ON A MODEL Next workshop: April 2nd, 2026 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM Check-in at 8:00 AM at the main entrance of the Faculty, 3200 Sicotte Street,  St-Hyacinthe, Quebec, J2S 8H5 Recognized training hours: 7h    Subscribe now *POUR LA PAGE EN FRANÇAIS, CLIQUER ICI SUMMARY DESCRIPTION This one-day workshop will be divided into 2 parts: a theoretical component and a practical component. During the theoretical portion, we will cover the principles of surgery, including surgeon preparation, equipment preparation, and patient preparation. We will also refine the use of various suture materials and the execution of different suture patterns and techniques. The practical portion will include several exercises validated by the instructor: patient preparation, surgeon preparation (surgical attire, scrubbing, gowning and gloving), instrument table setup, surgical draping simulation, performing a laparotomy on a model  and closing it in multiple layers. We will refine pedicle ligation techniques (three-clamp ligation with simple and transfixing ligatures). Participants will learn how to perform a modified Miller's knot. Special attention will be given to maintaining asepsis and refining suture techniques. The workshop ratio is one instructor per 6 teams of 2 participants. Documents and videos will be sent to participants a few weeks before the workshop. SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES Principles of Surgery Learn the various surgical principles and be able to apply them Review the names of the different surgical instruments Surgeon Preparation Refine the principles of surgeon preparation and be able to apply them, particularly gowning, hand scrubbing, and donning the surgical gown and gloves Patient Preparation Learn and refine the principles of patient preparation, particularly surgeon attire and detailed preparation of the surgical site (clipping, hair aspiration, washing, and skin disinfection) Apply the principles of placing a four-towel drape covered with a fenestrated field drape Equipment Preparation Learn and refine the technique for preparing surgical equipment, with an emphasis on setting up an instrument table while respecting aseptic principles Performing a Laparotomy Know the anatomical landmarks for performing a laparotomy Know all the steps (different layers) involved in performing a laparotomy Apply hemostasis techniques Perform a three-clamp ligation on a pedicle; apply a simple ligature using a modified Miller's knot, then perform a transfixing ligature Refine the technique for closing a laparotomy in multiple layers Learn to maintain asepsis during laparotomy and identify minor and major aseptic breaks Know and apply mitigation and correction measures for surgical aseptic breaks GENERAL OBJECTIVES Acquire and refine basic surgical principles and techniques Assessment of acquired competencies FEES * Training: $675 + tax (including coffee, lunch, and snacks) Limited to 12 participants INSTRUCTOR  Bertrand Lussier, DMV, MSc, Diplomate ACVS    A graduate of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at the Université de Montréal in 1986, he has been teaching surgery there since 1999. He is also an associate researcher at the CHUM Research Centre and a member of the Groupe de recherche en pharmacologie animale du Québec. He currently divides his activities between research and teaching at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. He also participates in the promotion of surgical knowledge and expertise abroad. In addition to his clinical research activities, he has developed expertise in experimental surgery across various systems, models, and species. Professor Lussier has had the honour of receiving 10 excellence awards in teaching, clinical teaching, and research.
